What to Expect at Menno

Coming to a church is a new experience each and every time. Not always knowing what to expect can make it that much harder to try something new. Here is some of what to expect.

  • People dressed semi-formally Sunday Best is no longer the order of the day. Most people wear comfortable, business-like clothes (button down shirt and jeans) without being too formal. Women will not be wearing head covering or other distinctive dress one might historically associate with Mennonite practice.
  • Expect to have someone at the door to greet you. A member is usually at the door to welcome you in and answer any questions that you may have.
  • Music will be early and often Menno enjoys singing together, with a handful of hymns every Sunday. The variety is wide but are usually choruses from the hymn book with accompaniment on piano, organ, or other instruments.
  • You will find a wide variety of ages As with many congregations Menno does trend somewhat older. Most generations, though are represented with ways for many ages to plug in. Every service has a time for younger members. Education hour for all ages happens during the school months.
  • Leadership will be both member based and the pastors You will see people volunteering to take turn with leading in worship leading, children’s stories, ushering, and many more. It is usually the pastors who will speak, but there will be many voices heard.
  • Sharing will be part of the worship Sharing of thoughts and ideas for the week is part of the worship service with an opportunity available to do so. By all means– no one HAS to share, but the opportunity is open.
  • Relationships are welcome we endeavor to make people welcome and get to know you the best we can as part of welcoming you.
  • Special Practices are less frequent Some Christian traditions celebrate certain rituals every week. Mennonites tend to be less structured in their worship. Communion happens several times a year in the hopes that when it does happen it is that much more special. Regular recitations are not expected as a usual part of worship.

These broad strokes will find you here. Have other curiosities? Feel free to contact us with questions.

We are not perfect at welcoming people but our intention is that Menno be a place where you can come and be part of God’s body together.
